There has been a flurry of applications to re-open or start new uranium mining activities near Grants and Mount Taylor. On July 16, 1979, a broken dam released 1,100 tons of radioactive uranium tailings and 94 million gallons of toxic wastewater into the Rio Puerco. Nufuels Inc., a subsidiary of Laramide Resources Ltd., has applied for a new Discharge Permit to develop an in-situ uranium recovery (ISR) solution mining operation.
