Chaco Canyon

The deadline is today(!) to send in public comments regarding the Chaco Culture National Historical Park Area Withdrawal

https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2016892/510

The Bureau of Land Management proposes to withdraw ~350,000 acres surrounding the site from extractive activities for the next 20 years. This is an effort to protect this World Heritage Site and also may help steer the path forward regarding sustainable energy development.

The direct e-mail address for comments is: BLM_NM_FM_CCNHP_Area_Withdrawal_Comments@blm.gov

Nuclear Legacy

New Mexico has two national laboratories and a waste facility as part of the nuclear weapons program. The detonation of the first nuclear bomb at the Trinity Site left another nuclear legacy that does not get as much attention. The fallout from that blast contaminated air, land, and water–leaving malignant reminders for the generations of New Mexicans living in the Tularosa Basin.

The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) has never included the Tularosa Basin Downwinders. RECA is scheduled to expire July 10, 2022. PLEASE CONTACT FEDERAL OFFICIALS and let them know that you want RECA extended and expanded to cover downwinders and uranium and plutonium workers throughout the western states.

Food is Fundamental

A basic necessity. An expression of culture. A weapon of oppression?

We all need food for nourishment. Are food systems designed to produce nourishing food? Food is central to social gatherings and cultural celebrations. Do food systems foster diversity among producers? Hegemonic and corporate control of arable land and clean water put many populations at risk for food insecurity. Are food systems designed to concentrate control over resources?

Community supported agriculture (CSA) and food justice initiatives have been growing globally for years. Locally, The Source, in SE ABQ will hold a meeting about hosting a CSA on Sunday, March 20, at 4:30 p. m., 1111 Carlisle Blvd. SE. A potluck will follow. Other projects that have been active over the years in the metro area include Food Justice Initiative UNM and Feed the Hood.
