UNM Students Speak for the Earth and Against Genocide

On Earth Day 2024, students committed to stopping the genocide in Gaza and keeping a planet to inhabit encamped near the duck pond on UNM’s Main Campus. Generations of activists were present, including those who could speak to campus protests against the wars in Viet Nam and destructive capabilities of the war machine on populations and the earth itself. UNM students join other students on campuses across the country in calling for universities to divest from companies profiting from weapons sales to Israel. GPAMA represented and reminded attendees of the National Guard attacks on peaceful protesters in 1970 at UNM. Fifty-four years later, we are on the cusp of another defining moment for a generation of young people. May the powers that be choose peace and humanity over profits and political power. CEASEFIRE NOW!

25 Years of WIPP

On March 26, 1999, the first shipment of transuranic waste arrived at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southeastern New Mexico. Note the word, pilot, in the name. After 25 years, there was supposed to be a gradual closure of the plant. Instead, there has been an effort to expand nuclear waste storage capacity in the area. These efforts appear stalled for the moment because of protective environmental legislation passed in New Mexico in 2023.
