On Earth Day 2024, students committed to stopping the genocide in Gaza and keeping a planet to inhabit encamped near the duck pond on UNM’s Main Campus. Generations of activists were present, including those who could speak to campus protests against the wars in Viet Nam and destructive capabilities of the war machine on populations and the earth itself. UNM students join other students on campuses across the country in calling for universities to divest from companies profiting from weapons sales to Israel. GPAMA represented and reminded attendees of the National Guard attacks on peaceful protesters in 1970 at UNM. Fifty-four years later, we are on the cusp of another defining moment for a generation of young people. May the powers that be choose peace and humanity over profits and political power.
