25 Years of WIPP

On March 26, 1999, the first shipment of transuranic waste arrived at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southeastern New Mexico. Note the word, pilot, in the name. After 25 years, there was supposed to be a gradual closure of the plant. Instead, there has been an effort to expand nuclear waste storage capacity in the area. These efforts appear stalled for the moment because of protective environmental legislation passed in New Mexico in 2023.
